Portrait of Jane Baron, Fine Art PhotographerMy lifelong interest in the visual arts began as early as I can remember. My love for drawing, painting, pottery, fiber art and all things visual culminated with a fine art degree in 1972 from the University of California at Irvine. Wanting to explore the commercial side of art, I took courses in graphic design and illustration for two years at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Here I developed technical aspects of art and design which instilled in me an interest in cutting edge technology as it applies to art. Before the widespread availability of digital tools I used black and white film cameras and spent many hours in darkrooms enjoying the magic of images emerging from chemical baths. The available access to a darkroom and the ability to print and process my own images later inspired my interest in the 'digital darkroom.' Working without color put a focus on the story and the strong graphic, compositional elements of my images still visible in my work today.

Since 1994 I have been working with combining digital photographic technology with the skills and experience of traditional art mediums. Integrating strong design principles with a fine art painterly style I have discovered a passion for photography with an eye for bold images in natural environments. I have been swept away with the new archival large format printers and print all of my own work. I enjoy experimenting with different fine art cotton rag papers, canvas, metal and the other unusual fabrics. The printing process is an art form in its own right. Combining photography with the art of printing allows me the most control in the final image.

As a 30 year resident of Sonoma County, I now find myself contributing to the Sonoma County Cultural Arts Council as a resident artist and to the local community college as a graphic design instructor. Through Sonoma County Cultural Arts Council I have participated in open studio tours, 2010 will be my 10th year participating in the prestigious Artrails Open Studios Tour.  I am currently showing wine country images at Chateau St. Jean winery in the Valley of the Moon, Sonoma County.

Through many years of adventure travel, primarily by bicycle or on foot, I have found unique stories and special moments begging to be told. I encourage you to explore my web gallery and invite you to view these images as a connection to human experiences that we all share and understand.
